I’ve often talked and written about the fact that Congress seems to struggle doing their job. I don’t think anyone would disagree. All the polls seem to indicate that the trust in Congress and belief that Congress is doing their job is low. The numbers are not even across party lines, the party lines would give them higher ratings. Fortunately, I think we have an option to help Congress.
In a recent article, I found a potential solution that will help Congress both show up and be more productive at work. The solution is not as traditional as one would expect, but the studies seem to show it will help. It’s just a simple pill that will help Congressional representatives. The pill? Well it’s Viagra.
Yes, Viagra has now been proven to be successful in helping absenteeism and presenteeism in those who take it. According to the article, Viagra can help men both show up at work and be more productive at work when they are there. While Congress may show up to work, it’s the latter issue that I am more interested in.
Before you suggest we are discriminating against women, let me explain. The article only talks about men, but the research has shown that Viagra has positive effects on women too. So be assured, we are not gender biased here in this suggestion. A simple pill of Viagra could help Congress be effective.
I’ll admit, there’s a lot of satire in the suggestions I make above, but the underlying premise is true. Congress has been extremely ineffective over the past year. The 116th Congress is on pace to pass the least amount of legislation in the past 50 years. While many would argue the Republican controlled Congress during the Obama administration was ineffective, this one has them beat.
But it hasn’t been for a lack of bills. If you look a the numbers on the page, this Congress is on pace for the most total legislation in 50 years. This just highlights the significant lack of work that the two parties are able to accomplish together.
Congress continues to maintain low approval ratings. You have to go back into 2003 to find the last time Congress had approval ratings near 50%. While they do not match the lows of the Obama administration, it is still pretty pitiful. As it appears, we have two options to help them. Option one is to vote them out in November 2020 and replace them. Option two is to simply get them a subscription to Viagra and hope for the best.
