There is a big problem in the United States with our culture. I’m not talking about President Trump here or any specific thing. I’m talking about our society in general. In a society where we used to have standards and morals, we are now left without. Now, the motto is simply do whatever you must to get your way.
You can disagree with me, that’s fine. I have no issue with that. But let me encourage you to hear me out. To start, I am not saying that Americans have ever been perfect. People are human and have always manipulated things. Selfishness is nothing new. As a Christian, I see it back in Biblical times all throughout history. But what I want to look at is the change in what is acceptable in public anymore.
Up until the last decade or two, people generally tried to get along. We saw bipartisan work in our government, people reaching across the aisle in private dealings and places we came together without division. Those places may be sporting events or places of worship, but we had some form of place. We simply do not have that now. But why? Based on recent history, I’m convinced it’s because we simply have become a selfish society.
Look at who is being established as role models. Some on the left have idolized the Democrat squad as they call themselves. These ladies could certainly be role models. Yet, they aren’t great role models. Omar has been caught in affairs and in financial issues. AOC has had her issues with campaign finance and refusing to play nice with the Democratic Party. You get the idea with these members of the squad. They are all selfish and are teaching anyone around them how to be selfish.
But it isn’t just politics. It’s nearly everything in our culture. Recently, news came out about the Houston Astros and their cheating. Similar reports exist about the Boston Red Sox. It’s absolutely horrible that a game, such as baseball, cannot be played honestly. Someone must cheat to get ahead. But it gets better. Want to know what’s worse? The fact that a news organization runs an article in support of cheating because “baseball is boring.” Are we a society that has lost all of our morals?
Those around us are teaching anyone that will watch and listen that it’s ok to do whatever you want, no matter who it hurts. Our government officials will run through a sham impeachment, just because they didn’t get their way in 2016. The 2016 Democratic candidate even financed a dossier full of fake information just in an attempt to win. We have a President, while I like his policy, has made no secret about how he treats women and bullies people into getting his way. I understand hard nosed business, but again, this is not a great example. A baseball team will work to cheat athletic ability, because it’s too difficult to win on ability alone. We’ve had the same thing in football with video scandals.
It goes beyond politics and sports. We have the case of Theranos from a few years back, where many investors and patients were deceived about bloodwork technology. Someone will fake an assault allegation against someone, just to try to protect themselves. We used to respect our law enforcement, now it’s main stream news and respected to write stories about how they are degraded and disrespected. But there’s the flip side as well. A police officer made up a story about being disrespected just for attention.
These stories are happening every day. But why? We are seeing the moral fabric of our society go away right before our eyes. The morals and standards of honesty and decency that used to be staples for American culture are gone. Our society is focused on self-pleasure rather than any concern for other Americans. We have no respect for the lives of others. It’s the “all about me” mentality.
It’s no surprise we have mass shootings, rampant crime and people who cannot get off Instagram long enough to hold a job. The idea is, “if it’s not about me, I don’t want it.” Rather than living in a society filled with logic and conversation, we live in a society where people are stuck in their phones taking selfies and liking their favorite models. If we do not achieve some level of moral decency again in this nation, God help us.
