Charlotte, NC – On Tuesday, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper rejected the plans of the RNC to hold their convention. President Trump had requested an immediate answer from the Governor about having a full convention. North Carolina is still under restrictions under its reopening plan.
Soon after the announcement from Cooper and the state of North Carolina, GOP chairwoman Ronna McDaniel released this statement.

The decision by Cooper comes just a day after he was spotted removing his mask and violating his orders amid crowded protests in downtown Raleigh. Cooper went out of the Governor’s mansion, pulled his mask down, and took part in a PR stunt.
Under the Safer at Home phase 2, outdoor gatherings are limited to 25 people or less. Protests are exempted under the order, but everyone attending the event is encouraged to wear a mask. Cooper did have a mask around his neck, but did not wear it appropriately. Members of his security team surrounding him did not wear masks either.
Gov. Cooper has been at odds with the GOP over the event for several weeks. North Carolina continues to remain a state that has not been significantly impacted by COVID-19. The RNC proposed multiple safety measures to be able to have the event at full capacity.
As a North Carolinian, I would love to see the RNC come to our state. We can certainly use the money to help repair our ravished economy. Yet, Cooper cannot see beyond the publicity stunts that he hopes will help his reelection campaign.
His challenger, Lt. Gov. Dan Forest, quickly called out Cooper in a series of statements.

On Tuesday evening, President Trump made a statement about Cooper’s decision. He said that he had wanted to have the event in North Carolina, but the event would be forced to move due to Cooper.

Several states have shared their interest in holding the RNC. Florida and Texas have both said they would give the RNC what they want and can pull off the convention in a short amount of time. Georgia also emerged as a potential candidate to hold the RNC. The RNC will need to make a decision soon.
North Carolinians should take note of Cooper’s actions here. Cooper is only out for himself and to win reelection. He’s playing politics with the recovery and the RNC. This is not a time for games; this is a time for decisive leadership and action. Maybe he should look to President Trump for some guidance in this area.
