CNN’s senior legal analyst said the Justice Department taking five years to investigate first son Hunter Biden is “beyond anything I’ve seen before.”
“This is preposterous, this has been pending … since 2018,” said Eli Honig, senior legal analyst at CNN. “This spans the Trump administration and the Biden administration. Someone’s gotta make a call on this case, I don’t know what is going on, but it’s beyond anything I’ve seen before.”
Biden is under investigation for purchasing a firearm while using drugs, which is a federal offense. He is also at the center of a probe by the Internal Revenue Service over his taxes.
Honig added that the investigation should have taken “five weeks,” not five years.
Two whistleblowers have come forward from the IRS to say Biden is receiving special treatment in the investigation.
The first whistleblower, Gary Shapley, came forward in April and claimed that the Biden administration is showing “preferential treatment” toward the president’s son and holding back in the investigation. He also alleged that Attorney General Merrick Garland gave misleading testimony in March when he said that the U.S. attorney in Delaware, who has been in charge of the Biden probe since 2018, has been allowed to proceed without interference.
Biden’s lawyer said in April that Shapley broke the law by telling Congress about his concerns.
A second whistleblower claimed in May to have faced retaliation for raising concerns about the agency’s investigation into the first son.
