The Minnesota House’s number-two Democrat, Rep. Dan Wolgamott, was arrested Friday night for driving under the influence of alcohol.
A Minnesota State Patrol officer pulled over Wolgamott on the highway after an observer reported seeing the Democratic lawmaker drinking vodka alone in a liquor store parking lot, MPR News reported. The incident report states that Wolgamott was swerving, that his vehicle lacked a front license plate, and that his registration had expired.
Wolgamott failed the officer’s field sobriety tests, including a breathalyzer test that logged his blood alcohol level at 0.106 percent, solidly above the legal limit of 0.08 percent. Wolgamott, who was arrested specifically for driving while impaired, was released without needing to post bail.
Wolgamott’s brush with the law comes soon after the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association named him Legislator of the Year. “Representative Wolgamott is a true friend and supporter of law enforcement and increased public safety,” the organization’s executive director stated.
The Democrat has a history of supporting progressive priorities in the Minnesota House. He has pushed legislation to give driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, sponsored a bill to allow for permanent absentee voting, and voted for legislation that would allow abortions for any reason at any point in a pregnancy.
Wolgamott has also rubbed shoulders with a number of prominent national Democrats. He wrote on Twitter that he had partnered with Minnesota’s U.S. senators, Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, and that he was honored to welcome Vice President Kamala Harris to St. Cloud.
Per his mugshot, Wolgamott appears to be in good spirits.
