On July 21, the former president’s campaign referred to the new federal criminal trial date of May 2024 as a “major setback” for DOJ prosecutors. The new trial date, which was originally set to start on May 20, 2024, was established earlier that day by U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon in response to requests for extensions from both Special Counsel Jack Smith and Mr. Trump’s legal team.
