Former Michigan congressman Mike Rogers (R.) on Wednesday announced his 2024 candidacy for U.S. Senate.
“I thought I put politics behind me. But like you, I know something’s broken,” Rogers said in his campaign announcement video. “America under Biden and his cronies is going in the wrong direction.”
The candidate criticized President Joe Biden and other politicians for “failing to address big problems,” such as inflation, the border crisis, and Chinese aggression.
Rogers served seven terms as a U.S. representative for parts of central Michigan, rising to become chairman of the House Intelligence Committee before retiring in 2015.
In addition to his previous political experience, Rogers also touted his post-congressional career in cybersecurity, where he worked to “stop foreign threats like China.”
Rogers is the first prominent Republican to declare his candidacy after longtime Democratic senator Debbie Stabenow announced her retirement ahead of the 2024 election. Republican sources told Fox News that the National Republican Senatorial Committee persuaded Rogers to run.
Rep. Elissa Slotkin, who in February announced her candidacy, will likely be the Democratic nominee.
Rogers’s entry into the race has the potential to make Republicans competitive in the state as they aim to win back a Senate majority in 2024. The GOP needs to flip one or two seats, depending on who wins the White House.
