The New York Police Department said Monday it arrested two women for allegedly assaulting a 41-year-old Jewish woman on Manhattan’s Upper West Side.
Twenty-six-year-old Mehwish Omer and 25-year-old Stephanie Gonzalez face hate crime charges for allegedly assaulting the Jewish woman on Nov. 9 after she confronted them as they were tearing down posters of Israelis whom Hamas terrorists took hostage in their Oct. 7 attack, police said, according to the New York Post. The two allegedly ripped the Star of David necklace from the woman’s neck and knocked her cellphone, which the woman used to record the two, out of her hand.
The Jewish woman declined medical attention for injuries she sustained to her face and neck, the police said. Gonzalez, whom police arrested last week, faces charges of assault and attempted robbery, while Omer, who surrendered Monday, received assault and criminal mischief charges.
Omer and Gonzalez are not the only people who have allegedly assaulted a Jewish person after tearing down posters of hostages. A 19-year-old woman last month allegedly hit a 24-year-old Israeli student at Columbia University with a stick after the Israeli student confronted her while she was tearing down posters.
