Back in June, Newsmax ran an article about how Hillary Clinton was running for President in 2020. In the article, the writer described how Joe Biden was a mirror copy of Hillary Clinton, trying to repeat her 2016 campaign. The article drew a lot of similarities between the two, but it has me to thinking that Hillary Clinton could run for President in 2020.
Now sure, you may immediately say “but she ruled that out back in March” and I would agree that she did say she was not going to run again. However, over the last couple of months some interesting events have caused me to think she could potentially announce a run.
Over the last 2 months, Clinton has raised her profile by being critical of the Trump administration and speaking out regarding high profile issues. She has attacked Trump’s positions on foreign policy with Iran, his Salute to America event and has talked about the crisis at the border. For someone that was relatively silent soon after losing the election, she has certainly taken a more public approach over the last 2 months.
Combine that with the fact that the current Democratic candidates are in a race to the left that seems to have no end in sight. The latest NBC/WSJ poll continues to show Biden in the lead, by 7% over Senator Elizabeth Warren. The support for Biden has continued to decline after a poor debate performance and the continued assault of the radicals he is competing with.
Hillary Clinton has the name recognition and the ability to raise money quick enough to jump into the race late. During the 2016 election cycle, Clinton announced her candidacy in April. With over 20 candidates in the race, it would be concerning for Clinton to jump in too quick as the support would be split.
Reports are that Clinton has not definitively shut the door on a 2020 run. Clinton continues to have Presidential aspirations and feels that the election was stolen from her. As the current candidates continue to attack each other and move to the left, Clinton could easily enter the race in the fall as the moderate savior of the Democratic Party.
While there are no polls to support the Hillary Clinton 2020 run, the Stossel odds do show her in the list. Clinton would easily have a greater appeal to the Democratic base. She could easily select one of the current progressive candidates as a running mate (think Pete Buttigieg) and run away with the nomination. She would be positioned as the savior of the Democratic primary if this scenario plays out.
Would Democrats unite behind another Clinton run? She has maintained a moderate enough profile and while she advocates for some of the radical positions, she positions them in a way that is easier for moderates to accept. She is younger than Biden and Sanders for those who are concerned about age, like AOC. It will take more candidates to drop out of the current lineup to get her to enter, but a Clinton candidacy is still a very real possibility.
