New York, N.Y. – Canada has officially banned assault weapons in the wake of their most recent shooting. The move had been expected for the last several days. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau made the announcement on Friday.
In his comments, Trudeau said that these weapons were made for one purpose, to kill people as quickly as possible. The police report from the shooting in Nova Scotia reports that there were military style weapons used. In all, 22 people lost their lives in the shooting.
One interesting note in the story. The Guardian reports that the new law would have probably not stopped the shooting. The shooter did not have appropriate permits and the weapons were obtained illegally.
The new ban covers 1500 models and variants of firearms. A two year moratorium was given for firearm owners to comply with the ban. Gun owners will be offered buy back options to comply with the bill.
The Canadian bill is similar to measures that have been proposed in the United States, but have not been passed. The United States assault weapons ban expired in 2004 and has been a hot topic in the political spectrum since.
