Columbia, S.C. – Across the country, there are calls to reopen the economy. Many states have taken different approaches, but there’s a few things that are evident as we work to reopen the economy. Let’s take a closer look.
The Wall Street Journal has an article from Saturday talking about how many people stayed home in SC after the reopening. The article shares how many small businesses are just not seeing customers return. But is there an explanation for this. I believe there is.
First of all, the media has continued their onslaught of fear mongering press. As SC started to reopen, the press ran multiple articles like this one which highlighted the risks. Others have argued about how SC didn’t meet appropriate measures to reopen.
It’s continued fear mongering from the media. As we continue to learn, we have learned the virus is not as deadly as once feared. We also have learned that the virus has spread more than we believed.
Many people will refuse to go out simply because the media’s messaging. They believe that they will die if they step outside their homes. They do not realize the level of spread in the community.
There’s another reason that many people may not be going out to support these businesses, however. Over 30 million Americans are essentially unemployed. Sure, many may have been laid off, but they are not earning any income.
Without income, many Americans may not have the money to support these local businesses. Rather than eating out, many Americans are opting to eat at home. It hurts restaurants and local businesses that rely on people to get out of their homes.
States, like South Carolina, rely on tourism to help keep their economy going. In the article from WSJ, the discussion was about how expectations are for lower tourism volumes in South Carolina this year. They are hoping for a better fall. Overall, there is a bigger message here.
While the stay home orders are meant to protect people, they are hurting more people than we are protecting. You will hear from the media that the death totals from COVID-19 in the United States is over 66,000. They love being able to report that higher number.
If you look at real numbers from the CDC, it tells a far different story. As of May 1, the CDC only lists 37,308 deaths from the coronavirus. That does not help the media’s narrative at all. They need the higher totals to continue to push the fear. Fear drives a response and story which is what they want.
We really need to get our economy back open as much as possible to truly drive change to the situation. That may be with use of masks in public, to help control fear. It may be with guidance that those most at risk should consider staying home or taking extra precautions. But no matter what, our economy has to get back to some form of normal.
The division sewn by Democrats and the media will be hard for many to overcome. Everyday, Americans are hit with stories about how horrible conservatives are. Those evil people want folks to get back to work. They do not care about your health. They are full of chaos and disregard.
That’s simply not the case. The data does not support this level of a shut down. It may support some guidelines or suggestions, but not such closures. The virus may warrant some safety measures, but not the removal of constitutional rights.
These orders are most likely not constitutional. We are forcing ourselves into a recession and our country into a communistic approach through these measures. It’s time to open our country. It’s going to be hard to overcome this division, but we will.
Americans will not stand for this long. Across the country, patriots are coming out of hiding. In California, cities and Americans are protesting the overreach of government. In Michigan, protestors continue to push for the reopening of the state. There are so many more examples I could share.
If you really get down to it, the truth of the matter is that the stay orders hurt more Republicans and conservatives than anyone else. Vox has a story that looked at how areas that supported Hillary Clinton were most affected by the virus. In turn, I took a look at how small business was most affected through the stay orders in a recent podcast episode.
Our country needs to reopen. We must stop living in fear that is driven by the media. Yes, our lives will be different for a while, but we will get through this. We must get through this.
