Charlotte, N.C. — Shortly after the Parkland shooting in 2018, an article posted on the Democratic Socialists of America’s official website entitled, “The Second Amendment Is a Threat to Us All,” the authors made their case for the repeal of the 2nd amendment. The authors even go so far as to write a new amendment, which would read:
THE TWENTY-EIGHTH AMENDMENT TO THE UNITED STATES CONSTITUTION
Section 1: The second article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.
Section 2: The manufacturing, transportation or importation in or into any State, Territory, or possession of the United States for delivery or use therein of pump-action, semi-automatic or automatic firearms is hereby prohibited
Section 3: This article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by conventions in the several States, as provided in the Constitution, within ten years from the date of the submission hereof to the States by the Congress.
The authors clarified what this would mean for citizens of the United States, writing: “In other words, you can have a gun provided it is manually loaded. That means one bullet loaded in the gun, by hand at a time. We think the compromise should satisfy amateur and hobbyist gun-owning constituencies. Hunters, sport-shooters and private individuals will still retain their right to access enough firepower to pursue their hobbies or to protect themselves.”
Throughout the article, blame was never placed at the feet of the shooter (a name that will never be worthy of publication) who slaughtered the lives of many of the students and teachers at Stoneman Douglas High School. But rather blame was laid at my feet, Mark Robinson’s feet, the NRA’s feet, conservative’s feet, President Trump’s feet, and anyone else who values the 2nd amendment.
Research clearly shows that gun control laws simply don’t work, no matter how strict they are. Perhaps even more importantly, at a minimum, hundreds of thousands of Americans have defended themselves using guns over the past decade.
A 2013 study of firearm violence conducted by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Statistics found that from 2007 to 2011, there were at least 235,700 instances in which a victim of a criminal offense “used a firearm to threaten or attack an offender.” In another 103,000 instances, victims of property crimes used firearms to defend themselves.
Additionally, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, found, “Almost all national survey estimates indicate that defensive gun uses by victims are at least as common as offensive uses by criminals, with estimates of annual uses ranging from about 500,000 to more than 3 million, in the context of about 300,000 violent crimes involving firearms in 2008.”
In Glenn Beck’s new book entitled Arguing With Socialists Beck states, “with all the data that’s out there, it’s clear, there is no scientific basis for the claim that legal gun ownership should be abolished or even significantly restricted, but that’s exactly what socialists and others want to do.”
Isn’t that their point, though? As seen in their revised amendment, if they had it their way, it wouldn’t matter who has the best argument or data. All that would matter is that a majority of people believe legal gun ownership causes more problems than it solves.
While their revisions take pro-second amendment attitudes “into consideration,” the Left, and the DSA, cannot be trusted to govern. Why? Because they’re activists and they’re only focused on how they feel. Attitudes, feelings, and outrage are considered heroic attributes or something to which we should aspire.
And the thing they long for and aspire to have above all else? Power.
