Democrats are set to vote on the official impeachment inquiry, finally. This comes weeks after Speaker Nancy Pelosi said that Democrats were moving forward with impeachment against President Trump. Republicans complained that the failure to vote was leading to a sham inquiry.
At The Liberty Loft, we agree with Republicans that an official vote was needed to move forward. The closed door meetings that Republicans were lamenting were against precedent of the proceedings. Now, Democrats will take the impeachment probe public. Yet, it’s not without some reservation.
Many moderate Democrats express concern about holding a vote on the inquiry. The vote places them on record and could cause them issues in their districts where President Trump is more popular. The vote does not effect Democrats, such as Pelosi, who come from heavily Democrat districts.
The other issue that Democrats will now face is the attacks from Republicans. The White House and other key Republicans started on this as soon as the announcement was made. Republicans quickly spoke out that Democrats were proving Republicans right, that the inquiry was being conducted illegally.
Pelosi believes that voting on the formal inquiry will take away the Republicans line of argument. They believe that the American public can be convinced to support impeachment based on evidence that will come out. The issue with this argument is that public support of impeachment has declined in recent polls.
Democrats are hoping that the Republican attacks over a sham hearing will subside. They have lost control of the narrative, especially after Trump’s recent actions in Syria. Once new polls come out, I expect the support for impeachment to drop further due to these actions.
The shock of the impeachment scandal is over and the Democrats have probably lost their chance to win public support. It will be interesting to see if Democrats actually hold the vote on Thursday or not. It’s been promised for quite some time. Over the next few weeks, it will be interesting to see how Democrats handle the inquiry and any new evidence that is presented.
