Chicago, I.L. – All across America, healthcare workers are under attack. If you follow our website, a few days ago I wrote about how people are lying about coronavirus. This article goes hand in hand with that story as well. Just to be clear, the American healthcare worker is not the enemy. These people are out there fighting to keep us safe from the coronavirus and thousands of other chronic conditions and diseases. The fact that they are being treated as an enemy is sickening.
I had read a story just a few weeks ago about a nurse in New Hampshire that was attacked. Apparently she was attacked at a store while shopping, but it didn’t make national news. The initial report came from her social media page and it has since been removed. After hearing about it, I brushed it off. Who would imagine that people would be attacking healthcare workers now.
Then, on Thursday it happens again. This time in Oklahoma City where a nurse was attacked while on the way to work. Apparently, the attacker thought the nurse was exposing the community to COVID-19 and decided to take matters into their own hands. The nurse was assaulted, but little information was shared outside of this.
Again, another attack happened in Chicago, IL. This one occurred on Wednesday, but we have more information on this one. The nurse was still in her scrubs after her shift in which she coughed on public transit. As the attacker went to leave the bus, he turned and punched the nurse. He accused her of attempting to get him sick with COVID-19. Why is this happening?
It’s happening because of the mass chaos surrounding the virus. It’s happening because of media reporting and driving mass hysteria. At The Liberty Loft, I’ve made sure the the stories we run on the coronavirus stick with the facts. Yes, the virus is highly contagious and is proving deadly. Yes, we have supported the social distancing measures as a means to help control the mass spread of the virus. Never would we try to increase the chaos and cause our healthcare workers to be at risk.
This is exactly what is happening right now. The very people we rely on to keep us safe are under attack. These individuals work extra hours and risking their own lives. Then they are punished by the general public. America, we are better than this.
In talking with some of my friends in healthcare, some facilities are addressing the issue. They are requesting that staff change into scrubs at the hospital, to avoid the potential altercations. On one hand, I think this is a great idea to help prevent the spread to their families. But the fact that they are having to do this just to protect themselves from assault is appalling. It should not be this way.
If you’re reading this, I would encourage you to try to do something for healthcare workers. Those who are working those extra shifts and risking their lives to take care of our fellow Americans. This virus is scary and deadly, but we can do our part. As one friend of mine put it, buy a gift card to a local restaurant and give it to a healthcare worker. Not only do you help that small business in a time of need, but you help that healthcare worker also.
Maybe you can order them some pizza or send them some donuts. Maybe you can take a picture or record a video to encourage them. But most importantly, keep them in your prayers. This is an unprecedented time in our country and they need all the help they can get.
