Washington, DC – Republican lawmakers have introduced new legislature to rename the street in front of the Chinese embassy in Washington D.C. after the late Wuhan doctor, Li Wenliang. Dr. Wenliang was punished by the Chinese government for trying to warn the world about the spread of the Coronavirus.
The legislature that is being proposed by the lawmakers would rename the section of Washington street in front of the Chinese embassy “Li Wenliang Plaza” instead of keeping the current name, International Place.
Dr. Wenliang was among eight doctors who were reprimanded by the Chinese government for trying to sound the alarm to the rest of the world about the spread of the Coronavirus.
The bill to rename the street was proposed by Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas and co-sponsored by Sen. Ben Sasse of Nebraska.
Several lawmakers who are also co-sponsoring the bill have spoken out in favor of the name change decision.
U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn from Tennessee is one of several Republican lawmakers who has come out criticizing Chinese leaders for the response to the Coronavirus pandemic. Sen. Blackburn explained, “In naming this street in his honor, we will show the Chinese government and the world that truth prevails and free speech is paramount to who we are as a nation.”
Rep. Liz Cheney from Wyoming wrote in a tweet, “I’m honored to introduce a bill to name the street in front of the Chinese Embassy after Dr. Li. May this serve as a reminder to the CCP that truth and freedom will prevail, and that they will be held accountable for the devastating impact of their lives.”
