AUSTIN, Texas — On Monday, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order banning the implementation of vaccine mandates in any capacity — including in private businesses.
NBC News reports:
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott issued an executive order on Monday prohibiting any entity, including private businesses, from imposing COVID-19 vaccination requirements on employees or customers.
“The COVID-19 vaccine is safe, effective, and our best defense against the virus, but should remain voluntary and never forced,” said Abbott said in a statement.
Abbott, a Republican, said in his order that it was prompted by the Biden administration’s vaccine federal mandate, which the governor called federal overreach.
In August, Abbott banned vaccine mandates by all institutions run by the state or receiving state funds after previously banning vaccine passports and mask mandates.
Abbott has also requested that the Texas state legislature — which, in June, advanced a bill banning vaccine requirements in private businesses — pass a bill that would codify the ban into law.
Abbott’s bans are symbolic of his party’s resistance to increasingly draconian and invasive COVID measures by leftist officials and institutions — particularly those championed by President Joe Biden, who has issued a mask mandate on federal property, mandated vaccines for federal employees, and, most recently, announced his intent to direct the Occupational Safety and Health Administration to mandate vaccination in all workplaces with 100 or more employees.
