On Wednesday, Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) gave a stern warning to the Supreme Court. Specifically, he said that Justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh would pay a price if they chose to rule pro-life in an upcoming court case. This drew a rebuke from Chief Justice Roberts and the President. On Thursday, he tried to back off those statements.
In his statements from the Senate floor, Schumer said that he misspoke. He claims he should not have used the words he did, but that any assumption that he was threatening the two newest justices was a gross distortion of his words. Unfortunately, what Schumer said was a direct threat at the Justices. It was not a misspoken statement. He said exactly what he meant.
He claims that he meant it as a political warning to the President and to Republicans. Republicans certainly heard the message. Not the political one, but the actual one that Schumer was delivering. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell slammed Schumer’s statements, calling on Schumer to apologize. McConnell said that the statements were a threat to those justices.
The American Bar Association also spoke out against Schumer’s statements. The President of the ABA said that the threat against the justices was troubling and inappropriate. Schumer apparently got the message and took to the floor of the Senate for his statements, or what he was trying to consider an apology. The apology that was given was half hearted, however.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) has filed a motion to censure Sen. Schumer for his statements. In statements about the motion, Hawley called Schumer’s comments disgusting, shameful and weak. The Washington Times reports that approximately a dozen senators have signed onto the measure. The understanding is that it will have to move through committee before a vote takes place.
This is just the latest attempt in the Democrats plan to attack the Supreme Court. Democrats have claimed they want to reshape the court since the beginning of the Trump administration. Many Democrats began floating the idea of expanding the seats on the court should they regain power. This would be in an effort to eliminate any chance that a conservative viewpoint could pass the high court.
For the party that claims to be fighting for everyday Americans, it certainly seems like they are fighting to never lose. Democrats do not like losing (see Hillary Clinton or Stacey Abrams). While there is no method of impeachment for a Senator, the Senate should move to censure Schumer to reprimand him for his threat. It was a classless move from a career do-nothing Democrat.
